Clay has worked at Grand Valley since 2000 and has grown in the profession with the College of Education (COE). His passion for place-based education and service learning lead him to helping create the Groundswell hub of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative at the COE.  He has been a principal or co-principal investigator on grants totaling $1.3 million to support Groundswell and the 22 schools in Kent County doing meaningful work with students and the community. Additionally, Clay developed and helped found the COE Alumni Association and converted Colleagues from an alumni newsletter serving a tri-county area to an award-winning magazine reaching 28,000 worldwide.  He holds a Masters in Higher Education Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from Michigan State University.
